I often use my iPad in bed to watch TV shows and browse the web and for me the rotation lock was one of the best 'innovations' in the iPad over the iPhone. It makes total sense given the way one uses this device that it be a hardware switch that can be enabled instantly, this is much less relevant one could argue for the smaller handsets.
